Heart conditions and natural therapies
Cardiac Specialists at the Prince Alfred Hospital have recognised and are now incorporating natural remedies into treatment regimes for many cardiac issues resulting in surgery and hospitalisation.
Currently medications for blood pressure and high cholesterol levels aim to bring the figures to what is deemed to be optimal levels via the use of an array of pharmacological agents designed in one way or another to address the figures and bring it back to normal levels.
Through a series of clinical trials, a concoction of natural interventions including Fish Oil, Magnesium and Co-Enzyme Q10 were found to consistently reduce the days required to recover from serious heart surgeries, saving $4,800 in medical fees as well as providing better outcomes for patients, including a 50% decrease in the chance of Atrial Fibrillations.
This remedy of three different natural interventions work in synergy to address the underlying issues of why there are heart conditions in the first place, as opposed to simply altering the figures to fit back to normal. When combined with changes to diet and lifestyle the effects are truly unbelievable. So what are these supplements doing in our body.
Fish Oil - Fish oil helps to reduce the risk of sudden death from cardiac arrhythmias, reduces triglyceride levels, decreases blood pressure and stabilizes the blood clotting mechanisms. Fish oil also exerts anti-inflammatory benefits, reducing muscle, tissue and cellular inflammation and, in turn, reduces inflammatory diseases that may contribute to cardiovascular disease. Overall, there are several pathways in which fish oil can potentially benefit the cardiovascular system, and everyone can benefit from supplementation.
Co-Enzyme Q10 - CoQ10 has long been known for it’s benefits on heart health. This vitamin-like substance is crucial for the production of energy in heart cells, however statin drugs (chlosterol medication), alcohol, poor lifestyle choices and ageing stop the body’s production of CoQ10, so it’s important to supplement. CoQ10 boosts energy, enhances the immune system and acts as a powerful antioxidant. CoQ10 helps to prevent and treat heart disease due to its ability to improve energy production in cells, inhibit blood clot formation and act as an antioxidant. By scavenging free radicals (damaging compounds in the body that alter cell membranes, alter DNA and even cause cell death), CoQ10 stops the damage that they can cause, especially around the heart.
Magnesium - Every cell in the body needs magnesium. It is pivotal for muscle, nerve and tissue health and aids the body’s cells fend off stress. Essentially, it is one of the most important minerals for our body, however the majority of Australians are magnesium-deficient.
Magnesium helps to relax the muscles and tissues of the body, enabling them to work better whilst under increased stress. Magnesium can restore the blood vessel’s ability to open up when the body needs more blood and enables the cell’s to fend off stress. Magnesium is also a powerful preventer for platelet clumping, keeping blood thin and fluid.
Watch this space, as we will discuss each of these in further updates!
